There are so many places to ride in Dunedin and the surrounding area. Dunedin is a hilly city, but there are also plenty of flat cycling routes available.
The Otago Harbour cycleway is a fully separated cycleway running from city along the harbour side of the Otago Peninsula to Portobello. This route is flat and very scenic. If you don’t ride often or haven’t ridden a bike for years this is perfect way to experience the thrill of riding a bike again. This route is easily reached from our base in St Clair. Suitable for families with young children. As an optional extra, you can cross the Harbour at Portobello by Ferry to Port Chalmers- ferry booking essential. From Port Chalmers ride back to Dunedin on the West Harbour cycleway for a total of 36km.
Dunedin-Portobello 20km (40km return)
Port Chalmers-Dunedin 16km. (32km return)
Full loop 36km (ferry is required)
This loop is one of the most scenic rides in the Dunedin area and a must do for keen cyclists visiting Dunedin. This loop can be done in as little as 2 hours or it can form part of a longer all-day bike exploration of the Otago Peninsula. It is recommended to do the loop via the ‘high road’ first (Highcliff Road) and then return on the cycleway along the Harbour. You will be sharing Highcliff Road with local traffic and is narrow in places, so it is recommended for confident cyclists. You could include a visit to Larnach Castle, NZ’s only castle or ride the gravel ‘back roads’ to Sandfly Bay, Allans or Victory beaches, where you can view seals and sealions in their natural environment. Additionally from Portobello, you can ride the 11km- all flat- to Taiaroa Head, home of the world’s most accessible Albatross Colony.
This route follows Highcliff Road, the original main road to Portobello, which tops out at 330m ASL. It is a big climb up to the top of this hill taking between 30minutes and 1 hour of ride time, depending on your speed, but once you reach the top you are rewarded with a fantastic downhill to Portobello with a range of views of the Pacific Ocean. This is the ‘wild side’ of the Peninsula with many interesting volcanic cones and white sand beaches such as Sandfly Bay and Boulder Beach.
